THE POWER OF MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELLING
Mental health is more than diagnoses and labels — it's about how we navigate life's highs and lows in order to live well. Are you feeling weighed down by anxiety, struggling to find joy amidst depression, or maybe haunted by past traumas? It's tough, I get it. And you're not alone.
Mental health is more than anxiety, depression, trauma, and the DSM-V. I believe the World Health Organization (WHO, 2022) says it best:
“Mental health is a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realize their abilities, learn well and work well, and contribute to their community. It is an integral component of health and well-being that underpins our individual and collective abilities to make decisions, build relationships and shape the world we live in. Mental health is a basic human right. And it is crucial to personal, community and socio-economic development.
Mental health is more than the absence of mental disorders. It exists on a complex continuum, which is experienced differently from one person to the next, with varying degrees of difficulty and distress and potentially very different social and clinical outcomes.
Mental health conditions include mental disorders and psychosocial disabilities as well as other mental states associated with significant distress, impairment in functioning, or risk of self-harm. People with mental health conditions are more likely to experience lower levels of mental well-being, but this is not always or necessarily the case.”
Counselling or therapy is not a quick fix. In fact, only 10% of the healing work is done in the counselling room. However, that 10% is crucial in facilitating the other 90%.
In counselling, you may explore your story and gain insight into the different areas of your life that may be contributing to current symptoms such as anxiety and depression.
The remaining 90% is your deep work outside of counselling. That 90% is your reflection, application, and simply living your life.
Some may find short-term counselling to be sufficient in helping them find the solutions to minor presenting issues. Others may require long-term counselling. It really depends on your needs and ability to identify blockages, unravel them, and heal from them.
It’s important to note that the therapeutic alliance will give you the breakthrough and support that covers the physical, emotional, mental, and relational areas of your life.
No matter what you are struggling with, your mental health and wellbeing is pivotal in your being able to flourish well.
